The community preferred to use local law enforcement and social customs to deal with problems. Swift in particular noted the way in which the community on Tangier handles malfeasances within the community. Similarly, both communities distrust outside law enforcement, particularly state and federal enforcement. Neither group sees the necessity for relying on scientific knowledge in their day-to-day lives. Similarly, one of the Tangier watermen can spot an oyster bed or a good area for crabbing simply through their experiential and cultural knowledge of the area. A farmer in Wisconsin can, with an inspection, generally tell good farming land from bad farming land. Both speakers saw a heavy reliance on anecdotal and experiential knowledge in the communities they studied and, as a result, more skepticism of government regulation. But, nonetheless, the similarities were there. Swift’s watermen were admittedly more insular, relatively cut off from the rest of the country by the Chesapeake Bay when compared to their midwestern counterparts. The pair’s experiences, although undeniably different, yielded no shortage of cultural similarities between the populations. Professor Prifogle’s research places her in the rural Midwest, whereas Swift has spent fourteen months living with the watermen of Tangier Island on Virginia’s Eastern Shore. The trio began by talking about the guest speakers’ backgrounds. 6th through Redhook Books.įor more on Claire and her work, her work, check her out on Twitter, Amazon and her personal website. It’s a series of letters, each containing mysterious instructions designed to push Lottie out of her comfort zone. In her will, she leaves one last writing project-just for Lottie. Out of pity, he decides to buddy-up with Simon and give him advice about how to seduce Hannah. James, on the other hand, does notice this and sees Simon's pain. Much to Simon's annoyance, James not only gets respect from their co-workers but no one seems to notice that they are identical in appearance. Assertive and charming, James is Simon's polar opposite. Simon's boss announces the arrival of a new employee, James Simon, who looks identical to Simon, which causes Simon to faint upon first glance. He talks to detectives, who explain that if the man had jumped a few feet to the right, he would have been badly hurt but would have survived. One night, Simon sees a man jump to his death from the floor above Hannah's apartment. He sees her throwing away art and secretly retrieves and admires it. From his apartment he spies on a beautiful co-worker he admires, Hannah, who lives in the apartment opposite him. It is based on the 1846 novella The Double by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, about a man driven to breakdown when he is usurped by a doppelgänger. The Double is a 2013 British black comedy thriller film written and directed by Richard Ayoade and starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska. He gets into his roles and the fun he’s having is often infectious! On the other hand, you can tell that he’s having a really good time. A lot of his voices sound the same, and it seems that sometimes he doesn’t know who’s speaking. Where I’m Torn: - Michael Lesley’s narration is both really good and subpar. The audiobook has some great voice effects, from modulation to simultaneous speech. Klune creates a wonderful cast, each with distinct personalities. The dynamic between many of the characters works well. What I Liked: - Nick’s fan-fiction chapters are great! Here, the over-the-top and cliched dialogue is much more appropriate and works well. The novel, while trying to subvert a lot of genre tropes and cliches, ends up playing into many of them, especially in its dialogue. He does grow and mature toward the novel’s conclusion, but I never felt like I was rooting for him. Nick, the main character, isn’t that likable. Could be better: - The plot, though not without its funny and endearing moments, is fairly predictable. Don’t get me wrong, this is not a bad listen or novel by any means, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as I would’ve hoped based on the reviews. #3 The province of Armenia has villages and towns in plenty.
